I told my daughter I would not attend her wedding.
She was twenty-four years old, standing in my kitchen with tears in her eyes, asking me to do the one thing she wanted most.
“Dad, I need you there.”
I couldn’t look at her.
“You’re making a mistake.”
She shook her head.
“No. I’m marrying someone I love.”
“He’s from another faith.”
“I know.”
“You don’t understand what that means for this family.”
She stared at me.

But I wouldn’t listen.

After church, I drove to Naomi’s house.
I almost turned around three times.
When I arrived, I sat in the car for ten minutes.

“Why?”

She looked down.

I nodded.
“I know.”
She didn’t yell.
That made it worse.
“I was wrong.”
She looked at me.
“I thought I was protecting our family.”
“You were protecting an idea.”
I lowered my head.

She looked toward the children.

The little girl smiled shyly.
“And this is your grandson, Samuel.”
Samuel looked at me.
“Are you Grandpa?”
My throat tightened.
I looked at Naomi.

She shrugged.

I looked at my daughter.

My eyes filled again.

I sat down.
“Why did you never give up?”
She smiled sadly.

I couldn’t answer.
She continued.
“I was hurt.”

“I was angry.”

“But I didn’t want my children to grow up thinking differences mean people can’t love each other.”
I looked at Daniel.
He was holding her hand.

I realized then how completely wrong I had been.

“You don’t need permission.”
I looked at her.
She smiled.
For the first time in sixteen years, I felt like my daughter had opened the door.
