I’d made the same birthday cake for my grandson five years in a row. This was the first year someone decided it didn’t belong at his party.
For my grandson Mason’s tenth birthday, I baked the same chocolate cake he’d asked for every year since he was five.
Nothing fancy.
Chocolate frosting, strawberries around the edge, and his name written across the top.
Before closing the box, I added the little red race car.
It was plastic, barely two inches long, with a scratch across one door.
The car belonged to Mason, but after his fifth birthday, he asked me to keep it with my baking things. Every year before his birthday, he asked the same question.
“You’re bringing the car, right, Grandma?”
Every year, I told him yes. I arrived at my son Ryan’s house just after two.
There were balloons tied to the mailbox, a white tent covering half the backyard, and a woman with a headset directing two men carrying flower arrangements through the gate.

“What car?”

“Dad’s car?”

“I know. Did you get it back?”
“No.”
She grabbed her purse from a chair.
“I’ll give you $500.”
I actually laughed.
She wasn’t joking.
Vanessa pulled out several bills.
“Please. Five hundred dollars. Just get it back.”
“You offered me nothing when you threw it away.”
“I made a mistake.”
“What happened?”
“Please.”
“What happened, Vanessa?”
Her eyes darted toward the backyard.
“I’ll give you a thousand. I don’t care.”
I stared at her.
“You can’t buy back something you threw in the garbage.”
“Then help me get it.”
We rushed outside.
Vanessa lifted the trash lid.
Empty.
She froze.
“No.”
I looked inside myself.
The cake box was gone.
“Who emptied this?”
“Nobody. Trash pickup was yesterday.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Then who took it?”
“Grandma?”
We both turned.
Mason stood by the side gate.
In his palm was the little red race car.
My stomach dropped.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mr. Frank gave it to me.”
I stared at him. “Frank?”
Mason nodded.
“He said he found it outside.”
I looked toward the driveway. Frank’s car was parked behind mine.
Ryan came around the corner.
He saw what Mason was holding and stopped.
“That’s Dad’s.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I looked at Ryan.
“What is going on?”
He took the car carefully from Mason.
“Dad gave him this.”
“I know.”
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
“She didn’t.”
I turned toward her.
She wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Ryan handed the car back to Mason.
“Dad gave Mason that car for his fifth birthday.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Of course I remembered.
Jack had spent 20 minutes choosing between three nearly identical toy cars because Mason had recently decided red cars were faster.
He died four months later.
After that, I started putting the little car on Mason’s birthday cake.
At first, because seeing it made me smile.
Later, because Mason expected it.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is this why you suddenly wanted my cake back?”
She said nothing.
“Vanessa.”
“Ryan told me after I threw it away.”
“Told you what?”
Ryan rubbed his face.
“Mason’s been asking about Dad a lot lately. He told me he’s scared he’s starting to forget him.”
Mason looked uncomfortable.
I crouched beside him.
“Asking what, sweetheart?”
He shrugged.
“Stuff.”
“What kind of stuff?”

“Can I go?”
I didn’t push him.
“Of course.”
He closed his fingers around the car and ran off.
I stood.
“Why has he been asking about Jack?”
Ryan lowered his voice.
“We’ll talk about it.”
“No. We’re talking now.”
Vanessa whispered, “Can we please find the cake first?”
Then I thought about what Mason had said.
“Frank gave him the car.”
Ryan looked at me.
I was already heading toward the backyard.
I found Frank near the patio talking to one of Ryan’s neighbors.
“Frank, where did you find Mason’s car?”
His expression changed.
“On that cake outside.”
“What cake?”
“The chocolate one.”
Vanessa appeared behind me.
“Where is it?”
Frank looked between us.
“In my car.”
“Why did you take it?”
“The trash lid wasn’t shut all the way. I saw Jack’s little red car sticking out of the box.” He frowned. “I knew that car didn’t belong in the garbage.”
“Show me.”
Frank led us to his car.
The cake box was on the passenger seat.
The lid had collapsed.
Chocolate frosting covered one side of the cardboard.
Two strawberries had been crushed into the cake, and Mason’s name was split down the middle.
Frank looked embarrassed.
“I was going to tell you.”
“It’s okay.”
“I figured somebody threw it out by mistake.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Frank glanced at her, then at me.
“I gave Mason the car when I saw him at the gate.”
“Thank you.”
I carried the ruined cake into the kitchen.
Mason followed us.
He saw the box.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
“Mason,” Vanessa began.
His eyes moved from her to me.
“Why is my cake smashed?”
“It got thrown away,” I said carefully.
“By who?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Me.”
Mason stared at her.
“You threw it away?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought…”
She stopped.
Mason looked at the ruined chocolate frosting.
Then at the little car in his hand.
His voice became very small.
“Why did you throw Grandpa’s cake away?”
The room went silent.
I looked at Mason.
“Grandpa’s cake?”
He nodded as though I should already understand.
“Grandpa gave me the car.”
“I know.”
“And you make the cake.”
I felt something tighten in my chest.
“So he’s still at my birthday.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Mason looked down.
“I don’t remember him very well anymore.”
I knelt in front of him.
“What do you mean?”
“I remember stuff.”
“Like what?”
“He used to let me sit on the mower.”

“He did.”
“And he called me ‘Speedy.’”
“He did.”
Mason’s eyes filled.
“But I can’t remember his voice.”
I couldn’t speak.
“I know what he said. I just can’t hear how he said it.”
Ryan turned away.
Mason rubbed his cheek.
“I’m scared one day I won’t remember him at all.”
Behind us, Frank cleared his throat.
“You won’t have to do all the remembering by yourself, kid.”
Mason looked at him.
Frank gave him a small smile.
“Your grandma and I have enough stories about that old man to last you a lifetime.”
I pulled Mason against me.
For a while, none of us said anything.
Finally, I found my voice.
“Forgetting pieces doesn’t mean you forgot Grandpa.”
“But what if I forget more?”
“Then I’ll remember them with you.”
He pulled back.
“You will?”
“Every single thing I can.”
Mason looked at his red car.
“Can we still have Grandpa’s cake?”
I looked at the ruined box.
“Not this one.”
His face fell.
“But we can make another.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Mason.”
He didn’t look at her.
“I’m sorry.”

“I knew you asked Grandma for that cake. I threw it away anyway.”
“Why?”

“Because I thought mine was better.”

“Why?”
It was such a simple question.

“When I was your age, we didn’t have much money.”

She rarely talked about her childhood. “My mom made my birthday cakes too,” Vanessa said.
“Like Grandma?”
“Yes.”
She stared at the ruined cake.
“When I turned 11, I invited some girls from school. One of them asked why my mother had made my cake instead of buying me a real one.”

“It was real.”
Vanessa gave a broken little laugh.
“Yes. It was.”
She looked at me.
“I remember pretending I didn’t like it. My mother had stayed up half the night making it.”

“I wouldn’t even eat a piece.”
I looked at Vanessa, then at the ruined cake between us.
I didn’t have to say it.
She’d thrown away the same kind of love she’d once been ashamed to receive.

“You thought Mason would be embarrassed.”

“I promised myself my children would never feel cheap.”

Then back at his mother.
“But I asked for Grandma’s.”

“I know.”
“I like Grandma’s.”
“I know.”
“I wasn’t embarrassed.”
“I know that now.”
Mason held up the little car.
“And Grandpa’s supposed to go on it.”
Vanessa started crying.
Not loudly.
She just sat there while the tears came.
“I was trying to give you something better,” she said.
Mason looked confused.
“But it was already what I wanted.”
That was the sentence that broke her.
Vanessa apologized again.
This time, she didn’t explain herself afterward.
Then she looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I held her gaze.
“You could’ve hated my cake. You still didn’t have the right to throw it away.”
“I know.”
“Mason asked me to make it.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know that too.”
My eyes moved to the cake I’d spent the morning baking.
Vanessa followed them.
“I didn’t understand how much was already in it.”
For a moment, none of us said anything.
Then a burst of laughter came through the open back door.
The party was still going on without us.
Mason looked toward the sound.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Go have your birthday,” she said softly.
He hesitated, then went outside.
We followed a few minutes later.
Children ate pizza.
Someone started music.
Eventually, Vanessa’s $700 cake was cut.
Mason ate half a slice.
Then he came into the kitchen carrying his red car.
“Grandma?”
“Yes?”
“Can we make the chocolate one tonight?”
“After everybody leaves?”
He nodded.
I smiled.
“Absolutely.”
After the last guests left, the three of us went back into the kitchen.
Vanessa stood in the doorway. “Can I help?”
I looked at her.
For once, she wasn’t organizing anything.
She wasn’t holding her phone.
She wasn’t telling anyone where something belonged.
“Wash your hands.”
She did.
Mason cracked one egg badly enough that half the shell landed in the bowl.
Vanessa reached for it.
Then laughed.
I showed her how to get it out.
Ryan cleaned up the backyard while we worked.
When the cake cooled, I spread chocolate frosting across the top.
Vanessa watched.
“No piping bag?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Of course not.”
Mason arranged the strawberries.
They weren’t even.
Vanessa didn’t move them.
I wrote his name across the top.
The “M” leaned slightly to one side.
Nobody cared.
Finally, Mason took the little red race car from his pocket.
He pushed it gently into the frosting beside his name.
It sat crooked.
Vanessa stared at it.
For one second, I saw the old instinct in her.
Straighten it.
Fix it.
Make it perfect.
Instead, she lowered her hand.
Mason smiled.
“There.”
I put my arm around him.
“Grandpa’s cake?”
He nodded.
“Grandpa’s cake.”
Then he looked up at me.
“You really remember his voice?”
I smiled.
“Perfectly.”
“What did he sound like when he called me ‘Speedy’?”
I leaned close and did my best imitation.
Mason laughed.
It wasn’t perfect.
Memory never is.
But his hand stayed wrapped around mine while Vanessa lit ten candles on a homemade chocolate cake that wouldn’t have impressed a party planner.
Before Mason blew them out, Vanessa took one picture.
She didn’t move the strawberries.
She didn’t straighten his name.
And she left the little red car exactly where Mason had put it.
